Top 5 Information Technology Stocks For 2014

Alamy Would you store your data with a company if you had reason to believe that by doing so, you were essentially giving a government a free pass to access that valuable information at any time? A lot of people and businesses would say no. So the recent revelations of widespread electronic snooping by the National Security Agency should have the burgeoning cloud computing industry worried. How worried? A report released Monday by the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, a Washington, D.C.-based think tank, suggests that cloud companies could lose as much as $35 billion in revenue over the next three years as a result of the PRISM spying scandal. Much of the cloud industry currently resides in the U.S., with major players including Google (GOOG), Amazon (AMZN) and Microsoft (MSFT). But the report notes that other countries are racing to seize a share of what's projected to be a $207 billion industry by 2016. And a scandal that calls into question the privacy of data stored with American companies could provide these foreign competitors with an opening. To that point, the report quotes Neelie Kroes, the European Commissioner of Digital Affairs, who last month observed that "If European cloud customers cannot trust the United States government, then maybe they won't trust U.S.cloud providers either." The report also takes note of European business leaders and politicians who have raised the specter of government snooping of American cloud services, both before and after revelations of the NSA's PRISM program became public. The report estimates that the ongoing controversy could cost American companies anywhere from 10 percent to 20 percent of the foreign market, which adds up to somewhere between $21.5 billion and $35 billion in lost market share over the next three years. And those numbers aren't pulled out of thin air -- the organization notes that when the Cloud Security Alliance polled its members in June and July, 10 percent of foreign members said they had canceled a project with a U.S. based cloud service. And 36 percent of U.S. residents polled said that they were having more trouble doing business outside the country following the PRISM revelations. So the scandal didn't just shake Americans' faith in the government -- it also has the potential to cost the economy tens of billions of dollars. No wonder the administration is so angry about the leak.

Top 5 Energy Stocks To Own Right Now

This energy firm has transformed itself into more of a large-scale independent exploration and production (E&P) company, by spinning off its refining and marketing, midstream, and chemicals businesses, observes Geoffrey Seiler, editor of BullMarket.com.

Where ConocoPhillips (COP) remains similar to its former super-major peers is that its portfolio of assets is very diversified, consisting of onshore and offshore positions, along with LNG operations, a presence in the Canadian oil sands, and it operates worldwide.

Its smaller E&P rivals tend to have more concentrated positions, which, some would argue, gives them an advantage, because they have more focus. As of the end of 2012, ConocoPhillips' reserves totaled 8.6 billion BOE, more than half of which is liquids and 65% of which is developed.

ConocoPhillips has large acreage positions in the Eagle Ford, Permian Basin, and Bakken regions of the United States. It also has its oil sands properties in Canada. Its US shale plays are expected to provide about 60% of the company's production growth through 2017.

On January 10, 2012, it acquired certain oil and gas leaseholds, overriding royalty interests and producing properties located in North Dakota. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Matt DiLallo]

It costs upwards of $10 million for a small oil and gas producer to drill one Bakken well -- something that Kodiak Oil and Gas (NYSE: KOG  ) knows well. One of the major risks Kodiak faces is that oil prices slip below $70 a barrel, which is the an estimated level where wells become uneconomical. Meanwhile companies operating in the Canadian oil sands need oil prices to be in the $45-$70 range to break even. If oil had remained below those levels, ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM  ) would never have sanctioned its Kearl oil sands project, which, after cost overuns, will end up costing the company $12.9 billion to complete.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

As the old saying goes, "you need to spend money to make money." Bakken-focusedKodiak Oil & Gas (NYSE: KOG  ) is taking that saying to heart by making a very big bet on the Bakken this year.In fact, when you consider that the company's entire enterprise value isn't much more than $4 billion, what I'm about to tell you will seem especially large.

    Calling all cash flows
When you are trying to buy the market's best stocks, it's worth checking up on your companies' free cash flow once a quarter or so, to see whether it bears any relationship to the net income in the headlines. That's what we do with this series. Today, we're checking in on Vitacost.com (Nasdaq: VITC  ) , whose recent revenue and earnings are plotted below.

  • [By Seth Jayson]

Margins matter. The more Vitacost.com (Nasdaq: VITC  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I'm looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong Vitacost.com's competitive position could be.

Sales growth this last quarter was up only about 6%, but net income per share was up 21%. They pay a $0.60 dividend which gives them a dividend yield of 1.4%. Their cash flow yield is 4.6%, so they could easily raise their dividend. They are by far the leader in a very fragmented industry. I believe both [Vitamin Shoppe (NYSE: VSI  ) ] and GNC will do well and I think they may make a fair pairing in a portfolio. Stability versus growth.

They do have $1.1 billion in debt. But they generate about $200 million in cash flow a year and they have $174 million in cash, so that shouldn't be a problem. Their cash flow is very high, so in my opinion, is reason enough to believe they will beat the S&P 500 over the next ten years.

Barclays upgraded share s of Vitamin Shoppe (VSI) today, expressing a confidence in management that was, well, heartwarming.

Barclays’ analysts Meredith Adler and Sean Kras call Vitamin Shoppe’s management team “thoughtful, deliberate and disciplined” and praise their ability to diversify the business. As a result, they upgraded Vitamin Shoppe to Overweight from Equal Weight two days after Vitamin Shoppe released its earnings.

But Adler and Kras also spent a good number of words explaining what Vitamin Shoppe isn’t–specifically, it’s not GNC Holdings (GNC):

[Vitamin Shoppe] said it saw no fundamental change in consumer demand, nor did it feel much pressure from the bad media reports about things like multi-vitamins and fish oil, unlike GNC. [Vitamin Shoppe] has a much broader offering than GNC, however, so weakness in any one category rarely has a major impact on[Vitamin Shoppe's] overall sales the way it does at GNC. Conversely, it benefits less when there are few very successful products. For example, diet is a far smaller part of the sales mix at[Vitamin Shoppe] than at GNC. Last year diet had some strong products, but this year there are fewer. GNC comps were stronger than[Vitamin Shoppe's] last year, but we like the stability of[Vitamin Shoppe's] business, especially in the current environment.

Shares of Vitamin Shoppe have gained 1.8% to $43.42 at 3:24 p.m., while GNC has risen 0.8% to $37.43.

West Marine (Nasdaq: WMAR) is an undervalued retailer.  The company is going through a change in focus from a bricks and mortar boat product retailer to a fully integrated retail and wholesale business through bricks and clicks, targeting the boating and water enthusiast customer.   Recent results have been affected by a severe rainy and cool spring which hurt boat usage and delayed the start of the season.  The company has accelerated cash investments to build larger more productive stores and expand its ecommerce abilities, consequently affecting free cash flow short term.  The stock lacks sponsorship as there is only one research report written on the company by a small boutique firm.  The stock trades at only book value despite the company being the leading industry player with a solid balance sheet and significant net cash position.

AP/Jae C. Hong Companies can make brilliant moves, but there are also times when things don't work out quite as planned. From a book lover's tablet continuing to fade in the marketplace to a strong year for satellite radio, here's a rundown of the week's best and worst in the business world. Nook -- Loser Barnes & Noble (BKS) has seen the popularity of its Nook line of e-readers and tablets fade in recent quarters, but things have never slipped so sharply as they did during the holiday season. The bookseller is reporting a 60.5 percent plunge in Nook sales for the nine weeks ending Dec. 28. In short, there weren't a lot of Nooks in Santa's sleigh this year. The news is grim on the hardware end with devices and accessories off a steep 66.7 percent, but even digital sales fell a disappointing 27.3 percent. The Nook was supposed to be Barnes & Noble's catalyst for growth in a future in which consumers have tired of hardcovers and paperbacks. But now it's making up just 11 percent of the superstore chain's sales -- and falling fast. Something tells me there won't be a storybook ending for the Nook. Sirius XM Radio (SIRI) -- Winner Sirius XM Radio began the week moving higher after receiving an offer over the weekend to be acquired by majority investor Liberty Media (LMCA). It wasn't much of a premium, but that's what can happen when a company owns more than 51 percent of another. Then the satellite radio provider announced that it closed out 2013 with a better than expected 25.56 million subscribers. Sirius XM's previous outlook was to close out the year with 1.6 million net additions. It wound up adding 1.66 million net subscribers in 2013. Michael Bay -- Loser There are many opinions out there on the winners and losers during this week's CES expo as consumer tech companies introduce their latest gadgetry, but it's hard to beat Samsung's presentation where Hollywood director Michael Bay abandoned the stage when the teleprompter stopped working. For the past year, Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS  ) has been rowing its little boat in unforgiving waters -- borne up and down on the waves, but pulled ever on by tireless effort. Unfortunately the little boat also had a full-grown elephant duct-taped to its side -- that didn't help. But now the company has cut the Nook free, and it's not even pausing to watch the gray trunk sink under as it presses ever forward.

Despite what can best be described as asoft economy, small cap trucking stocks YRC Worldwide, Inc (NASDAQ: YRCW), Arkansas Best Corporation (NASDAQ: ABFS), Frozen Food Express Industries, Inc (NASDAQ: FFEX), Saia Inc (NASDAQ: SAIA) and USA Truck, Inc (NASDAQ: USAK) have been trucking some pretty impressive returns since the start of the year. In fact, these small cap trucking stocks are up anywhere from 72% to 150% or so since the start of the year despite the slow economy. Certainly trucking stocks provide a good indicator of how the economy is doing, but might investors bejumping the gun by pushing up these trucking stocks?

For a second day in a row, we need to look no further than the broadcasting sector for our best performers. Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC  ) and Cablevision (NYSE: CVC  ) advanced 8.1% and 3.5%, respectively, on speculation that a wave of mergers and acquisitions would sweep through the sector. If you recall, Gannettshares soared after announcing a $1.5 billion purchase of Beloyesterday to expand its national broadcasting presence.

Who loses in all this? Pure-play content distributors such as Cablevision Systems (NYSE: CVC  ) and DISH Network (NASDAQ: DISH  ) . Like partner Netflix, Apple is taking steps to eliminate the barriers between viewers and content created by these gatekeepers. Color me grateful -- both as an investor and as a fan of great television.

Obviously when looking at things like real estate you dont go by what it says on the balance sheet. You try to find a note on depreciation that breaks out land, buildings, etc. And gives information about how the company depreciates its property.

And of course you look at the Properties item in the 10-K. In the U.S., you then use the information youve gathered to check county land records and things like that for more information about the property.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Amanda Alix]

This spring, however, signs of a slowdown began to appear. The number of distressed properties began to diminish, prices began ticking upward, and interest rates started a slow rise. However, two snippets of good news may help float the boats of private equity firm Blackstone Group (NYSE: BX  ) , and single-family REITs Silver Bay (NYSE: SBY  ) and American Residential Properties (NYSE: ARPI  ) : easier credit, and higher foreclosure rates.

  • [By Mark Holder]

After an initial bump in Silver Bay, the stock has had a horrible 2013, now trading close to all-time lows. Recently, a couple of other IPOs in the sector have come to market with weak receptions. Both American Homes 4 Rent (NYSE: AMH  ) and American Residential Properties (NYSE: ARPI  ) offer different twists to the general thesis of investing in single-family rental properties to take advantage of the weakness in housing prices and the increased demand for rentals.

Getty Images SAN FRANCISCO -- Microsoft has joined Qualcomm and other technology companies in a bid to establish standard ways for household devices such as light bulbs and thermostats to talk to each other. The Qualcomm-backed AllSeen Alliance is among a growing number of efforts for companies working alone or in groups to promote protocols for how smart devices should work together in a trend increasingly referred to as the Internet of Things. Microsoft (MSFT) on Tuesday joined 50 other members in the AllSeen Alliance, including major consumer electronics players Panasonic, LG Electronics and Sharp, the group said. But chipmakers that compete with Qualcomm (QCOM) plan to launch a rival standards consortium as early as next week, an industry source who was familiar with the plans but not authorized to discuss them, also told Reuters. Battle lines are being drawn as manufacturers roll out growing numbers of Internet-connected burglar alarms, televisions and baby monitors. But like the early days of video cassette recorders, many of the smart home products being launched are incompatible with each other. Qualcomm and other tech companies believe the quick establishment of standards across home-connected gadgets, cars and wearable computing devices will accelerate the introduction of new devices by manufacturers. Making it easy for software developers to design apps that let household devices work together in useful ways, like making living room LED light bulbs flash red when food is burning on the stove, may also stir more interest from consumers who have yet to become excited by smart products currently on offer, the companies hope. To that end, Qualcomm led the development of a connection standard called AllJoyn and made it free for other companies to use in their products. But, like the rivalry between Betamax and VHS video formats ! over thre! e decades ago, Silicon Valley is far from agreement on what standards should rule. Apple (AAPL), known for

Given all the pain its investors have endured over the last year, is it finally time to admit that Apple's lost its mojo? Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One under-$10 nano-biopharmaceutical player that's starting to trend within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Nanoviricides (NNVC), which engages in the discovery, development and commercialization of anti-viral therapeutics primarily in the U.S. This stock has been ripping to the upside so far in 2013, with share up big by 198%.

If you take a look at the chart for Nanoviricides, you'll notice that this stock has recently formed a double bottom chart pattern at $4.55 to $4.52 a share. Following that bottom, shares of NNVC have now started to uptrend and move within range of triggering a big breakout trade. That trade will hit if NNVC manages to take out the upper-end of its recent sideways trading chart pattern, which has seen NNVC trend between $4.55 and $5.74 a share.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in NNVC if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at Friday's high of $4.94 a share to its 50-day moving average of $5.28 a share, and then once it takes out some more key overhead resistance levels at $5.72 to $5.74 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average volume of 234,994 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then NNVC will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $6.50 to its 52-week high at $7.59 a share.

Traders can look to buy NNVC off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $4.55 to $4.52 a share. One can also buy NNVC off strength once it starts to clear those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.
