Time to Say Sayonara USANA (USNA)

Two years and two weeks later - with a triple digit gain under my belt - I'm saying goodbye to USANA Health Sciences, Inc. (NYSE:USNA). My hypothetical portfolio of stocks that I like and want to play with as a trade in my 'sandbox' portfolio (a model portfolio I've admittedly ignored too much) added USNA back on July 8th of 2010. Now, up 119%, I'm pulling the plug on the position.

Don't get me wrong. I like the company. Heck, I like USANA Health Sciences more now than I did two years ago. The nutrition and supplement company that sells its product through a network marketing system cranked up its top line from $517 million in 2010 to $648 million last year, and ramped up its bottom line from $45 million to $66 million in the same timeframe. I was only 'renting' USNA shares, however, fairly confident that the stock would reflect the company's underlying growth... and maybe a little extra. Things worked out that way (including the little extra), but I don't want to push my luck. Since my portfolio is judged - not officially, but effectively - I think the prudent thing to do here is walk away with my gain in hand.

The mere suggestion will undoubtedly ruffle some feathers. USNA has become a market favorite of late, caused by and causing the straight-line move from $31.60 at the end of last year to $86.96 now. How stupid can I be to get let go of a rising star? Yeah, well, I've been around the block a few more times than I care to admit, and I've seen the action USANA Health Sciences, Inc. is giving us right now too many times before. When things look this decidedly bullish, far more often than not it's the beginning of the end. [Just for the record, back when I picked it and nobody else knew anything about the company, that was also a 'crazy' decision.]

The critics will still argue that I should be judging the stock's merits based on their future growth. I don't entirely disagree. However, more gray hairs than I can count also forces me to conclude that the best-of scenario is already priced into the stock. USNA may only be trading at 14.6 times its forward looking earnings, and the company's got a few beats under its belt too; more are apt to be on the way. The stock is only a reflection of USANA Health Sciences' underlying results when the market wants it to be so, however, and I've got a nagging feeling the market's going to decide to disconnect the stock and the company soon.. It may happen when USANA announces earnings tomorrow, setting up a "buy the rumor sell the news" situation regardless of what the company says.

I know the whole "buy companies, not stocks" thing is also an argument against my approach, but I've got new for you.... stocks have been more of a reflection of investor opinion than a measure of corporate success for more than a decade now. It may not feel right or rational, but it is what it is.

Top Sliver Companies For 2016

Bottom line? Sometimes you gotta cash in the board you have in the hand. That's what I'm doing with USANA.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Anders Bylund]

The long-term investment king should be familiar to longtime Fool readers. Energy drink giant Monster Beverage (NASDAQ: MNST  ) , formerly known as Hansen Natural, crushed all comers with a 22,200% return. That's nearly 72% per year on a sustained 10-year run, though the pace slowed down considerably in the back half of this jaw-dropping jump. Monster shares have "only" tripled in the last five years, which sounds weak only when compared to the nearly 60-bagger return of the previous five years.

Monster Beverage Corporation (MNST) results for its third quarter ended September 30, 2013 will be released on Thursday, November 7, 2013 after the close of the market. The company also said that chairman and chief executive officer Rodney Sacks and vice chairman and president Hilton Schlosberg will host an investor conference call that same day at 2:00 p.m. Pacific Time to review the company's financial results and operations.

  • [By Steve Symington]

Shares of Monster Beverage (NASDAQ: MNST  ) rose nearly 5% Monday after the company's board of directors approved a $200 million share repurchase program. As management stated recently, the company had already used every penny of the $250 million it authorized for share repurchases less than five months ago, so it looks like they were just itching to continue increasing shareholders' slice of the pie.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Ben Levisohn]

The past six months have been unkind to offshore drillers like Noble (NE), Ensco (ESV), Rowan (RDC) and Transocean (RIG). That doesn’t mean it’s time to buy, however.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

In fact, it’s a good day for offshore drillers all around, as Atwood Oceanics (ATW) has jumped 2.3% to $40.80, Rowan (RDC) has climbed 2.1% to $22.923 and Transocean (RIG) has advanced 0.7% to $28.98 and Noble (NE) is up 1.1% at $19.72.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Yes, it’s true. With offshore drillers like Noble (NE) Rowan (RDC) and Ensco (ESV) all down more than 20% this year, Societe General now have “neutral” stance on the group. The bank cut its ratings on Noble, Ensco and Rowan, as well.

Onshore, my favorite play is the Utica Shale, in which my top plays are Gulfport Energy Corp. (GPOR) and Rex Energy Corp. (REXX). Both companies have highly economic acreage, solid balance sheets and industry-leading production growth. I also like Rex Energy for its likely production upside. Another one of my favorite plays is the Eagle Ford Shale, in which my top plays are Penn Virginia Corp. (PVA) and Sanchez Energy Corp. (SN). Both have core acreage in the region, improving operating results and experienced management. Another favorite name of mine is Midstates Petroleum Co. Inc. (MPO). The company has assets in three solid plays and a management team with a long successful track record. Those are my favorite names at this time.

One energy player that's starting to move within range of triggering a major breakout trade is Midstates Petroleum (MPO), an independent exploration and production company focused on the application of modern drilling and completion techniques to oil-prone resources. This stock is off to a rough start in 2013, with shares off by 30%.

If you look at the chart for Midstates Petroleum, you'll notice that this stock has recently come out of a nasty downtrend that took shares from over $8 to its low of $4.26 a share. Shares of MPO have started to find some buyi! ng intere! st over the last month at $4.44, 4.26 and $4.48 a share, as the stock has held those levels on recent pullbacks. This could be signaling that a bottom is forming for MPO, since the downside volatility looks over. Shares of MPO are now rebounding strong off those support levels and are quickly moving within range of triggering a major breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in MPO if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $4.82 a share and then once it takes out its 50-day moving average at $5.30 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 542,939 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then MPO will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $6 to its 200-day moving average of $6.54 a share.

Traders can look to buy MPO off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $4.48 or $4.26 a share. One can also buy MPO off strength once it takes out those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

The PowerShares QQQ ETF tracks the Nasdaq 100 Index, which is made up of 100 of the biggest stocks in the Nasdaq Stock Market based on market capitalization. It includes U.S. and international companies but excludes the financial industry and a few others. It's technology-heavy, featuring industries such as telecommunications, retail, biotechnology, and computer hardware and software. Compared to many other major technology-focused ETFs, such as the iShares US Technology ETF (NYSEMKT: IYW  ) , this one is bigger, charges less in fees, and has a more impressive performance record. Its expense ratio, or annual fee, is a very low 0.2%, comparing favorably with many peers. It doesn't offer much of a dividend, as many of its holdings don't pay them.

Crazybboy When you sign up for those two-year mobile service contracts in exchange for a lower price on the latest high-tech phone, you're generally counting on that phone to last as long as your deal. But what if it gets dropped, is stepped on or just won't turn on? Is Your Phone Less Than a Year Old? If you're within the manufacturer's warranty period, you're probably OK. In the U.S., Apple (AAPL) will repair or replace its products if they fail within the first year. In my experience (two dead iPhones and o! ne laptop with a damaged hard drive), a short visit to the Apple Store generally results in either a same-day repair or a brand-new replacement. However, Apple's warranty won't cover cosmetic damage (such as a cracked screen), normal wear and tear, or damage clearly caused by "misuse" (say, dropping the phone in water). Other popular phones, such as Samsung's (SSNLF) Galaxy line, have a similar warranty policy. Older Than a Year? If you're outside the warranty period or the damage is not covered by the manufacturer, but you still have months left on your contract, what to do? You could shell out for a brand-new phone... or check your credit card statement. That's right: If you originally purchased the phone with a credit card, you may very well be covered for an additional year on top of the manufacturer's warranty. American Express (AXP) and Visa (V) Signature cards even cover wear and tear and refurbished items, which are excluded by some cards' policies. Many of these credit card warranties even add a year on to some warranties. Sounds Too Good to Be True... Of course, as with any type of warranty claim, you'll have to provide documentation -- an original receipt, proof of the card you used to purchase the item, a copy of the manufacturer's warranty and a repair estimate are common requirements. If your claim is approved, the company can choose to cover the repair cost or reimburse your original purchase cost. What If the Damage Still Isn't Co

FPO Inks Lease Deal - Analyst Blog

First Potomac Realty Trust (FPO) – an industrial real estate investment trust (REIT) – recently penned a lease deal with a professional services firm for 30,036 square feet of space at its Md.-based Class A office property, Redland Corporate Center. With this transaction, the property is now 100% leased.

The Redland Corporate Center, comprising multi-storied office buildings, 520 and 530 Gaither Road, spans 348,469 square feet. The property is positioned in I-270 corridor of Montgomery County and is close to famous landmarks such as Rio Washingtonian Center, Fallsgrove Village Center and King Farm Village Center.

Notably, the asset was acquired by First Potomac in Nov 2010, in a joint venture with Perseus Realty, LLC. This was the largest premium buyout by First Potomac that year.

Redland Corporate Center's prime location and high-class amenities make it an ideal property among First Potomac's assets in the Maryland area. We expect the deal to boost the company's rental revenues and strengthen its tenant base.

First Potomac owns, manages, develops and redevelops office, business parks and industrial properties in the greater Washington D.C. region. As of Mar 31, 2013, the company's portfolio spanned about 14 million square feet. The portfolio consists of 43% office property, 23% industrial property and 34% business parks.

First Potomac is expected to release second-quarter 2013 results on Jul 25. The company has an Earnings ESP (Read: Zacks Earnings ESP: A Better Method) of 0.00% and it carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Thus, we are not so confident about a positive earnings surprise.

Some better performing REITs include DCT Industrial Inc. (DCT), DuPont Fabros Technology, Inc. (DFT) and CubeSmart (CUBE). All these stocks carry a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).

DELAFIELD, Wis. (Stockpickr) -- Corporate insiders sell their own companies' stock for a number of reasons.

>>The Pros Hate These 5 Stocks -- Should You?

They might need the cash for a big personal purchase such as a new house or yacht, or they might need the cash to fund a charity. Sometimes they sell as part of a planned selling program that they have put in place for diversification purposes, which allows them to sell stock in stages instead of selling all at one price.

Other times they sell because they think their stock is overvalued and the risk/reward is no longer attractive. Some even dump their own stock because they have inside knowledge that a competitor is eating their lunch and stealing market share.

But insiders usually buy their own shares for one reason: They think the stock is a bargain and has tremendous upside.

>>5 Stocks Under $10 to Trade for Breakouts

The key word in that last statement is "think." Just because a corporate insider thinks his or her stock is going to trade higher, that doesn't mean it will play out that way. Insiders can have all the conviction in the world that their stock is a buy, but if the market doesn't agree with them, the stock could end up going nowhere. Also, I say "usually" because sometimes insiders are loaned money by the company to buy their own stock. Those loans are often sweetheart deals and shouldn't be viewed as organic insider buying.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Lawrence Meyers]

As a convenience store, it doesn’t have direct competition fromDollar Tree (DLTR) or Family Dollar (FDO) because these dollar stores aren exclusively focused on food (and they have no gasoline or cigarette sales), and theye targeted at the folks who are trying to save money over convenience, not vice versa. The convenience angle is another reason whyWalmart (WMT) and Costco (COST)aren’t competitors, since those behemoths are about a total shopping experience.

  • [By Ethan Roberts]

Shares of Dollar Tree (DLTR) were substantially lower this morning after the company reported third-quarter earnings. Dollar Tree earnings tallied 59 cents per diluted share of DLTR stock, which missed analyst estimates by two pennies.

  • [By Jacob Roche]

With the economy starting to improve, you might think Dollar Tree's (NASDAQ: DLTR  ) fortunes will reverse. The deep discounter provided unemployed and lower-income consumers a safe place in the storm, but with the economic weather clearing up, it would be reasonable to expect consumers to venture out again to higher-end retailers. However, that assumption would be wrong.

Falling Stock Correlation: What It Says About Consumer Spending

As we mentioned in the Take Aways from the August 26th Investment Policy Committee meeting, the correlation index has been steadily declining. In 2008-09, macroeconomic events drove nearly every stock downwards. Specific sectors and stocks moved in tandem with one another. Today, stocks and sub-industries within each sector are performing very differently – which indicates a return to a more normal stock market environment.
The Consumer Discretionary (also known as Consumer Cyclicals) sector is an example of an industry that has been rewarded for its fundamental success over the past 12 months. As a whole, the sector grew sales 6.1% and earnings 9.2% in the second quarter - much better than the 1.4% sales and 3.3% earnings growth of the S&P 500. While the overall sector did well in the second quarter, the table below shows how differently the 5 sub-categories of Consumer Discretionary performed:

As we drill down even further, sub-categories of sub-sectors differ even more dramatically. Below is a snapshot of the Retailing sub-sector and its notable components:

Specific stocks within each sub-category are varying in performance as well. General Merchandise retailers were significantly differentiated in the second quarter. Target’s (TGT) adjusted EPS were up 6.1% from 2012, while Dollar General (DG) and Dollar Tree’s (DLTR) earnings were up nearly 12% and 9%, respectively.
The differences in sales and earnings growth amongst these different industries tell a story. The economy is not improving enough that people feel like they can let go and spend money on pure pleasures, but it is improving enough that they can afford to replace their cars and fix the doors on their houses. As these items wear out and need to be replaced, we expect the pent up demand will drive increased economic activity from cons

Before we get to the Dow's biggest losers of the week, let's look at its top performer, Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) , which rose 8.98%. Shares began to rise on Monday after the company reported earnings and never looked back. Although revenue dropped 10% during the quarter, net income was much higher than Wall Street was expecting. The board also approved a $10 billion share-buyback program, and management said it's starting to see an improving world economy.

  • [By Matt Thalman]

Another Dow stock that likely fell on the news from China was Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) , which ended the day down 0.1%. Although today's announcement clearly didn't have a major affect on either caterpillar or Alcoa, it did add fuel to the bearish sentiment investors have had with each company this year. Caterpillar is down 7.24% year to date, while Alcoa has lost 8.06%. These may not seem like massive declines, but when we add in the fact that the Dow itself is up 12.94% in 2013, the idea that Alcoa and Caterpillar have been beaten by nearly 20% over just the past six months is rather shocking.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

The Dow Jones Industrials (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) is well known for giving income investors the dividend increases they like to see. All 30 Dow stocks pay dividends, and many of them consistently increase their quarterly payouts year after year. Interestingly, though, the timing of those dividend increases throughout the year reflects uneven patterns. After American Express (NYSE: AXP  ) and Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) pay out their recently declared higher dividends in the next couple of weeks, Dow investors could go quite a while without seeing another increase.

Stan Honda, AFP/Getty ImagesPassersby in front of the New York Stock Exchange on Tuesday, Christmas Eve. NEW YORK -- Stocks rose in a holiday-shortened trading day Tuesday, helped by a report that showed American companies were investing in their businesses at the fastest pace since January. Markets were open for just half a day ahead of the Christmas holiday, and trading volume was extremely light. Roughly 1.3 billion shares changed hands on the New York Stock Exchange, a third of what is traded on a regular day. It was the slowest day of the year. Materials and industrial stocks rose more than the rest of the market after the government reported that orders for long-lasting manufactured products rose 3.5 percent in November, more than economists expected. Core capital goods, a category that tracks business investment, jumped 4.5 percent, the biggest gain since January. DuPont (DD) rose $1.09, or 2 percent, to $63.83 and construction equipment maker Caterpillar (CAT) gained 95 cents, or 1 percent, to $90.91. The Dow Jones industrial average (^DJI) rose 62.94 points, or 0.4 percent, to 16,357.55. The Standard & Poor's 500 index (^GPSC) rose 5.33 points, or 0.3 percent, to 1,833.32 and the Nasdaq composite (^IXIC) rose 6.51 points, or 0.2 percent, to 4,155.42. Stocks have been rising steadily since last Wednesday, when the Federal Reserve surprised investors by announcing it was cutting back its bond-buying program, citing an improving economy. The Fed said it will reduce its bond purchases to $75 billion a month beginning in January, down from $85 billion. The last five days of gains have added to what has been a historic year for stock market investors. The S&P 500 index is up 28.6 percent for 2013, or 30.9 when dividends are included, its best year since 1997. With four trading days left in the year, many traders expect stocks to continue higher until New Year's Eve. "Nothing has derailed this market this year, even with all the bad headlin

Advisors' Opinion:

I believe investors should look past the current low dividend yields and relatively higher multiples of NAV per share for BDCs such as FDUS, MAIN, and TCAP, but should consider the total return for these companies. The table below compares FDUS and MAIN to both ACAS which does not pay dividends and Horizon Technology Finance (HRZN) that pays a higher than average dividend but after taking into account dividend growth, special dividends, and NAV per share growth (using last twelve months actual for projection purposes) it is clear that the expected investor return is based on more than the current dividend yield.

I talked about insider trading last week, laying out how I use it to find value stocks. But we can also use the insiders screen to help solve one of the most difficult question facing investors today.

We already know that the stock of companies with recent open-market purchases by the top two executives have a strong tendency to go up substantially over the next year. We can now screen for companies that have shown this type of positive activity from insiders and also provide a high dividend yield.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Kyle Woodley]

The short, sucky answer? A lot:

Plans for a igafactorymeant to produce millions of electric-car batteries ginned up excitement, but also raised eyebrows. The Wall Street Journal reported on skepticism in the space — including from heads at Volkswagen (VLKAY) and battery maker Highpower International (HPJ). Now, even planned investment partner Panasonic (PC) now sounds iffy on the project, with company Kazuhiro Tsuga saying “the investment risk is definitely larger.” Not good. There also was Tesla direct sales snafu. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie huffed and puffed and (on March 11) successfully blew down Tesla direct sales model, with the Motor Vehicle Commission approving a measure to enforce an already-existing ban on direct sales. On the flip side, Tesla has scored victories in New York and Ohio in the past month, and is making progress in Arizona (which has a little incentive on the board). Production of the Model X has been pushed further back, to 2015. Musk’s reasons — mostly having to do with focusing on bolstering Model S sales — are valid, but that doesn really soften the blow of a longer wait for the much-anticipated addition to Tesla line. To address the issue of battery fires in the Model S, TSLA added titanium shields and aluminum deflector plates to new vehicles and offered to install them for free in all its existing cars. Tesla margins are excellent, and there no hard number on the cost impact of the fix, but titanium ain cheap. This definitely isn going to add to Tesla bottom line. What Now?

I won belabor you with my bullish position on TSLA stock, but if you want, you can see it here. In short, Musk is a genius; Tesla products are quality and appeal to (and are priced for) the all-important luxury segment; and just given size and scale, TSLA has oh-so-much room to grow.

Mecox Lane (MCOX) offers a selection of products apparel, accessories and home and health care products through its online platform and third party e-commerce websites. This stock closed up 13.5% to $4.10 in Tuesday's trading session.

    Tuesday's Range: $3.62-$4.18

    52-Week Range: $1.67-$7.88

    Tuesday's Volume: 274,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 238,211

From a technical perspective, MCOX exploded higher here right above some near-term support at $3.42 and back above its 50-day moving average of $4 with above-average volume. This stock has been trending sideways and consolidating over the last two months, with shares moving between $3.23 on the downside and $4.58 on the upside. This spike on Tuesday is quickly pushing shares of MCOX within range of breaking out above the upper-end of its recent range. That trade will hit if MCOX manages to clear Tuesday's high of $4.18 and then above more resistance at $4.58 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in MCOX as long as it's trending above its 200-day at $3.24 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 238,211 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then MCOX will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $6 to its 52-week high at $7.88.

Most mainland Chinese property developers outperformed the markets, with Guangzhou R&F Properties Co. Hong Kong-based cosmetics brand Sa Sa International Holdings (HK:0178) (SAXJF) fell 1.6%, with a decline in Chinese June non-manufacturing data helping weigh on some retailers. Over on the Chinese mainland, the Shanghai Composite Index (CN:SHCOMP) retreated 0.4%, pulling back from its highest close in two weeks.
