Finally, Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) continued its poor performance, falling another 1.5% and coming closer to flirting with a new multi-year low. A minor bounce in precious metals prices has helped to reverse a small part of gold's big decline from earlier this year, bringing some hope that mining activity might rise and increase demand for Caterpillar's mining equipment. Yet, even amid signs of relative strength in the U.S., the economies of the rest of the world don't look nearly as perky, and that should keep a lid over Caterpillar's prospects until the trend reverses itself.

  • [By Blake Bos]

In the video below, Motley Fool industrials analyst Blake Bos takes a question posted on Facebook about Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) from a Motley Fool reader, who writes: "What's the two year outlook? I am so confused about where their revenue comes from. They make truck engines, locomotives, mining, agriculture, they have too many competitors for me to understand where they are strong, weak, improving or falling behind. What do I do with my CAT? Move the dollars to my mutual fund? It is all in a Roth IRA."

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

The rush to cut costs has been felt the hardest by mining-industry suppliers, including Caterpillar (CAT) and Joy Global(JOY), Graf and Levental say, because cancelling orders for new equipment is one of the easiest ways to cut costs.
