Top Information Technology Stocks To Own Right Now

Fulfilling its promise to scrutinize broker-dealers’ cybersecurity policies this year, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority has issued a targeted exam letter to firms stating that the self-regulator is assessing how firms manage cybersecurity threats.

In the exam letter, FINRA states that it is conducting its assessment “in light of the critical role information technology (IT) plays in the securities industry, the increasing threat to firms' IT systems from a variety of sources, and the potential harm to investors, firms and the financial system as a whole that these threats pose.”

Specifically, FINRA says it will be looking at firms' policies in the following areas:

—approaches to information technology risk assessment;
—business continuity plans in case of a cyberattack;
—organizational structures and reporting lines;
—processes for sharing and obtaining information about cybersecurity threats;
—understanding of concerns and threats faced by the industry;
—assessment of the impact of cyberattacks on the firm over the past 12 months;
—approaches to handling distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks;
—training programs;
—insurance coverage for cybersecurity-related events; and
—contractual arrangements with third-party service providers

Advisors' Opinion:

    ZipRealty (ZIPR) is a company that meets 5 of the 6 criteria listed above. The stock has fallen out of favor over the last several years as performance declined during the recession. The company has completed a major restructuring and recently returned to positive EBITDA margins. Operations of the company are further supported by a pickup in home sales in the US. There has also been significant insider buying over the past month, and the company trades at a deep discount to its competition. I believe the stock has at least 60% upside from its current price.

Advisors' Opinion:

    Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) was the second biggest loser of the day, with its shares down 2% at $35.68 in the final minutes of trading on Wednesday. The disappointment here is that Alan Mulally of Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) is staying on and will nottake the helm to replace Steve Ballmer as CEO. That is good for Ford (it rose 1%) but is bad for Microsoft. Another issue is that Microsoft simply remains above what most analysts think it is worth.

    Kathryn Scott Osler/The Denver Post via Getty ImagesThe 2013 Lincoln MKS sedan is among the vehicles recalled Tuesday by Ford. DETROIT -- Ford Motor (F) said Tuesday it is recalling 100,610 vehicles in North America in six separate actions. About 92,000 of the vehicles have a potential problem with front axles that run to right wheels and may have not been properly installed during assembly. That may cause the axle to move outward over time and eventually become disengaged. There have been no injuries, crashes or deaths related to this issue or any of the six issues in the half dozen recalls, a Ford spokeswoman said. The front right axle issue is a potential hazard in 2013-2014 Ford Taurus, Flex, and Interceptor models, as well as Lincoln MKS and MKT models, and 2012-2014 Ford Edge and 2014 Lincoln MKX models. About 83,000 of the recalled vehicles are in the United States and federalized territories, along with about 8,200 in Canada and 600 in Mexico, Ford said. The next-largest recall among the six announced Tuesday covers about 5,264 model year 2011-2014 Ford F59 Commercial Stripped Chassis vehicles in which the electrical system may short-circuit and possibly lead to a fire. No fires have been reported, Ford said. Also recalled were about 2,100 model year 2014 Ford Escape crossover vehicles that may have panorama roof glass that was not glued properly during assembly.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Holly LaFon] ou Coffee is a gourmet coffee company that owns the second-largest number of coffeehouses in the U.S. After rising significantly in the second quarter of 2011, its stock price dropped in the fourth quarter, when Joel Greenblatt purchased it. He bought 52,794 shares at an average price of $13.27.

    The company has increased revenue and EBITDA almost every year since 2005, reaching $284 million and $22.4 million, respectively, in 2010. Its return on equity and return on assets also turned positive in 2009 and increased in 2010; return on assets increased from 10.1 percent in 2009 to 15 percent in 2010, and return on assets increased 6 percent to 9.2 percent in 2010. Free cash flow, which Greenblatt typically considers highly important, has been positive only two years since 2005, in 2008 and 2009.

    Cofeehouse sales have increased for the last eight quarters, including 4.1 percent in the quarter ended Oct. 2, 2011. Much of the company sales growth has come because it has begun selling food.

    The outlook for Caribou growth is also positive. Daily coffee consumption increased to 40 percent of 18-24 year olds in 2011 from 31 percent of the age group in 2010, returning to its 2009 level, according to the National Coffee Drinking Study from the National Coffee Association. Caribou recently began growing as well. In the third quarter of 2011, it opened three company-owned stores, its first in over three years, and in the fourth quarter, it opened five more. For 2012, it plans to open 55 to 70 new locations and issued fiscal year 2012 net sales growth guidance of 10 percent.
